This is just a list of current issues that may be of interest and services that FPC
can provide.

Data security on sale of pc

This is a very current issue with a recent headline highlighting that customer bank
details were still retained on a PC sold on Ebay!

So how can you ensure this doesn't happen to you? By adopting the following process:

1. Back up your data from the old PC - as soon as the PC has been sold, rest assured
whatever non sensitive data is still on the PC will be needed! Of course if you backup
regularly, this will be an easy task!
2. There are 2 alternative approaches - one is definitely free and the other may be!
 a. Find the PCs original restore disks and restore the PC to its original data condition
when the PC was purchased.
 b. Buy or download for free encryption software.

The bottom line on keeping your data safe is to complete these tasks BEFORE selling
the PC!

An alternative to selling your PC is to decommission it i.e. strip it down and get rid of
parts not required.

Data security on decommissioning of PC

For a PC that will be thrown away or the parts recycled, simply removing the hard drive(s)
is all it takes to ensure your sensitive data remains secure.

This option also allows for the user to install the old hard drive in a USB chasis for access
via a USB port on the new PC.

Oops I have a virus!

The first question should be - how do you know? If it is as a result of the last anti virus
search by your anti virus package then:

1. Make sure Windows and Microsoft Office (if installed) are up to date
2. Make sure the application is up to date.
3. Re-run the anti virus application in Windows safe mode.
4. If this does not work, search the internet or even the anti virus application providers
web site for hints and tips (or even step by step instructions) on how to rid yourself of
the virus.

If it is more a feeling than fact, then look at the next section.

If you do not really know but you do not have any security software installed or
have not run a sweep for a while, install the software and run urgently!

PC performance issues

The 64 million dollar question! A common complaint from a user is that their PC is slow!
But what is causing the slowness - there could be main reasons.

But the first point to bear in mind is that a PC over time gets slower as a natural consequence
of use! For example, when first delivered and installed, I bet it was a great deal faster.

The performance issues may be hardware related (more RAM required, running out of disk space)
or there may be other reasons (spyware, too many applications open and in use, too many
applications automatically starting up, anti virus sweep just started!).

So there is no easy answer and any performance issue will require further analysis - see
list of services in the next section.
