Help

The best form of free help is on the web - either through searching on Google or
Yahoo or through registering with user group forums. There are loads! But here are a
few examples of application specific user groups:

Microsoft Dynamics NAV User Group
Office User Group (independent of Microsoft)
Office User Group (Microsoft)

Security Applications

This refers to anti-virus and anti-spyware free applications. Sometimes these are joined
together under one application that completes both tasks.

Recommended free security applications include:
Free AVG (anti-virus and anti-spyware)
Spybot (anti spyware)

Please be aware that some security applications may have installation problems if
another security application is installed.  During the AVG installation process it will
produce a message about this if Norton Internet Security is already installed, we have
found that AVG will still work fine with Norton Internet Security.

Office Applications

Open source office applications are free to use and can provide all that a user requires.
The most well known is OpenOffice.  OpenOffice contains the same kinds of applications
as a copy of Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition, its interface is very similar.

Backup Applications

It is very important to back up data files regularly and there are a number of free
back-up applications available from the web.

FPC would recommend SyncBack from 2BrightSparks. The download is available here. 
This application allows the user to complete backups (full or modified) under profile
names.  It allows back ups to external drives, USB flash drives, networks drives, etc.
through IP addresses or using the Windows Network Center.

PCs

There is no such thing as a free lunch! Some businesses are offering free laptops for
sign-up for broadband services but the user should look at the overall cost and the
specification of the laptop being provided.

Having said this, if all the user requires is a laptop to perform basic tasks like browsing
websites and creating Microsoft Word/Excel documents then these 'free' laptops may
fulfil a need!!
