iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch Tips

All three of these devices use the same
operating system, called iPhone O/S.
This means that fixes that would apply to one device is likely work for
the others.
Back-Ups
We recommend that you frequently 'sync' your device to your
computer. When these devices are connected to iTunes it creates a back-up of the data on
your device. It does this before the syncing process changes data on the device, so if
you need to use the Restore button in iTunes your last back-up will be loaded onto
the device.
If you want to check what back-ups iTunes has taken then you can go
into the iTunes Preferences and click on the Devices tab. This will show you
which devices have been backed up and when the back-ups were last taken.
Even better, these back-ups can be loaded onto new versions of the
device. Once you have completed the initial registration iTunes will give you the option
of restoring an existing back-up onto the new device, meaning all your
contacts,
media(music, videos, photos), apps, e-mail settings and existing system
settings
will be transferred to the new device.
My Device
is Not Working!
If one of these devices freezes up or crashes there are three
steps you should initially try:
1. The Sleep button at the top of your device is
also the power button when held
down. Try holding that
button down and you should get a bar on the
screen that
says 'Slide to turn off'.
Slide the bar to turn it off and leave the
device for about a minute, then hold down the
Sleep
button again to turn the device back
on. Is the device working?
2. If that didn't work then try a hardware
reset. This will reset the iOS operating
system on the device, it does not delete any of
your data on the device but it will
reset all of your system settings, including your security passcode.
To do this you need to hold down
the Sleep button and a second later also hold down the Home button on the front
of the unit. Keep doing this until the screen goes blank. You should then
see the Apple logo and then your Home screen should appear. Is the device
working?
3. The last option that you can try yourself is to
connect your device to iTunes and use the Restore button that is
available when your device is appears in iTunes, which will reset the device back to factory
settings and then restore the data from the last back-up taken.
If these three steps did not resolve the issue then you should go to
the Apple
Support website.
There you can check the device's serial number(located on the pack
panel of your device) to confirm if your unit is still within warranty and if it is
then you can book a repair service online. If not then there are discussion forums there to
check for any other possible solutions.
I Want to
Sell My Device
Its a great idea. Apple equipment is always popular, just
do a quick check on eBay.
Because of this you should be able to get a good price for your
existing device to fund the purchase of a new one.
Before you do sell it though you may want to remove all your data off
the unit so that the buyer doesn't get any of your personal information or purchased data,
and doing this is a simple process.
To remove your data from the device all you need to do is connect the
device to iTunes on your computer and select the Restore button. As described above
this will restore the device back to factory settings and load on an available back-up.
During this process the top bar in iTunes shows the status of the restoration. If you
disconnect the connector cable from the device before the back-up is loaded on you have a blank
device ready to be sold, with no personal information on it. If you then try to turn
the device on all you will see is a picture of the connector cable and the iTunes logo. This
indicates that the device needs to be registered in iTunes, which needs to be done by the new
owner.
If you are selling an iPhone then you also need to make sure you have
removed the SIM card using the SIM removal tool that came with all iPhones from the 3G
model onwards.
